Evaluation of Porous Granular Embankment Materials Used as Pavement Subgrade/Granular Subbase

The objective in this project is to develop adequate characterization techniques for aggregate subgrade materials in terms of source, composition and particle size/shape properties, evaluate field performances of the most commonly utilized aggregate subgrade materials for subgrade replacement and granular subbase through accelerated testing of full-scale test sections, and accordingly, revise material specifications governing the use of these materials in pavement applications. Selected aggregate subgrade materials will be evaluated for (i) imaging-based size/shape characterization and (ii) field performance by constructing both unsurfaced and HMA-surfaced pavements with the aggregate subgrade material subbases and testing them using the ATLAS equipment.
