SPR-3714: Guardrails for Use on Historic Bridges
Federal and state laws protect historically significant bridges. However, the original railing is not likely to meet current AASHTO requirements. The objective of this study is to develop a toolbox of design/rehabilitation alternatives that may be used to address existing rails on historic bridges. This research will develop solutions to provide a safe and efficient railing for these historic bridges as well as alternative, economic solutions for the design of bridge deck overhang on both historic and new bridges.
