Freight Performance Measures: Trucking in Georgia

To help the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) better plan for truck movements within the State, this project will: (1) Based on the existing literature, and interviews with GDOT staff, develop a set of performance metrics that will help GDOT understand and track the performance of truck transport within the State, emphasizing existing truck freight mobility and access issues, and how these impact on the State's economy and the environment; (2) Identify and assess how well existing GDOT and other data sources support the proposed performance metrics, and (3) Identify methods and the level of effort required for collecting the data needed to support improved performance measurement in the future.

  • Supplemental Notes:
    • The principal research product will be a set of candidate truck freight performance measures for use in GDOT long range transportation planning and freight planning studies. These measures will help GDOT to assess how effectively trucks are moving within Georgia, in terms of mobility, on-time reliability, access to facilities, fuel economy and environmental impact. Better targeting of existing and emerging problems means better returns on GDOT investments in truck mobility-impacting projects. Better truck mobility translates into lower freight delivery costs, which in turn can help to reduce the prices charged for goods delivered to Georgia businesses and residents.
