Evaluation of Bridge Deck Seal Treatments for ABC Decks
In an effort to prolong the life of highway bridges and reduce maintenance work, it is specified that decks are to be overlaid with a sealing material prior to project completion. Several different kinds of materials are used to accomplish this. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is delivering bridges differently than ever before, the ABC process presents several new challenges to properly sealing new bridge decks. It is proposed that this project research what the ideal characteristics for an ABC overlay would be, what materials are available, and what material properties best meet these criteria. Consider overlay systems for pre-cast panels, SPMT moved bridges, and slide-in bridges. Also, timing of overlays (before bridge is moved vs. after, etc.), and ability to accommodate movement between panels, span over grout pockets, etc.
