Integration of Multi-Modal Public Transportation Systems

Methods will be developed for coordinating and jointly optimizing multi-modal public transportation systems, involving conventional bus services, dial-a-ride services, taxis, and possibly other modes. These methods will determine: (1) which modes or service types are preferable for particular trips, times of day, urban environments and other circumstances; (2) when and where particular combinations of modes are preferable; and (3) when and how passenger transfers among vehicles and modes should be coordinated. Newly developed routing and scheduling algorithms will be used to manage dial-a-ride vehicles, taxis, and possibly other paratransit options. For overall system planning, design, and operations, the methods will be designed to analyze and optimize decisions on: (1) network design for fixed route services; (2) location of transfer stations and vehicle depots; (3) vehicle characteristics; (4) vehicle fleet composition; (5) schedules for fixed route and demand-responsive services; (6) reliability margins or "slack" times in schedules; and (7) real-time dispatching and re-assignment decisions for dealing with variability and surprises in demand, traffic conditions, vehicle breakdowns and other probabilistic factors.
