Pollution Prevention/Environmental Compliance Assistance for Iowa Department of Transportation

The Iowa Department of Transportation has 110 facilities across the state of Iowa. These facilities are generally responsible for maintaining the vast number of vehicles within the Iowa Department of Transportations fleet and storage of materials and fuel. These facilities are subject to various federal and state environmental regulations and strive to reduce waste generation and their impact on the environment. The Iowa Department of Transportation must ensure they are in compliance with environmental regulations and reduce waste generation to decrease potential liability the same as any private company. The Iowa Waste Reduction Center at the University of Northern Iowa has been assisting Iowa businesses implement successful pollution prevention programs and comply with federal and state environmental regulations for the past twenty three years. This assistance has successfully decreased waste being discharged to the environment and significantly helps ensure compliance with federal and state environmental regulations. The Iowa Waste Reduction Center proposes to use this vast experience to assist the Iowa Department of Transportation with waste reduction and environmental regulatory compliance. The Iowa Waste Reduction Center at the University of Northern Iowa will create pollution prevention/environmental compliance tools and training that will assist Iowa Department of Transportation facilities reduce waste and comply with pertinent state and federal environmental regulations.
