4th Year Monitoring of Noise Test Sections (Noise, Texture)

Tire/pavement noise, smoothness, and other pavement surface characteristics have been measured on approximately 80 sections with different types of asphalt surfaces, including conventional and rubberized open-graded mixes, dense-graded mixes, and rubberized gap-graded mixes, as well as experimental sections placed by the Department over the past eight years. An initial project that collected valuable pavement structural and functional information for two consecutive years was completed in 2007. A third year of monitoring of these sections through measurements at highway speed will be completed as part of the current Partnered Pavement Research Center (PPRC) project ending in June 2008. To capture performance trends in acoustic properties, smoothness, and distress progression, a fourth year of evaluation of these sections is anticipated in Winter/Spring 2009. Macrotexture, which is a significant variable for tire/pavement noise, will also continue to be measured. This will allow for further refinement in identifying the long-term noise producing properties of the different surface types and provide sufficient data for re-calibration of the preliminary performance models for noise developed from the first two years of data. The smoothness and durability part of this project is included under the "Smoothness" research area.
