Real-Time Estimation of Origin-Destination Matrices for I-66
Estimating dynamic origin-destination (OD) matrices has always been an important topic for transportation researchers due to its significance in real-time traffic management applications. Time-dependent OD information is essential input for Advanced Traffic Information and Management System. Accurate estimates of time-varying OD demands can greatly enhance on-line traffic management systems in terms of operational efficiency especially for use of management strategies based on Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA). Difficulty of predicting OD matrices remains due to the fact that real-time traffic information is not available at every moment and on every link within a specific transportation network. This makes prediction of all OD pairs become even harder. This work aims to address the needs of predicting OD matrices on a real-time basis. More specifically, a priori knowledge is earlier the traffic pattern and it is expected that we can estimate the OD demands later in the same day. It is anticipated that traffic assignment based models will be used to identify the relation between OD demands and the traffic pattern observed. The core concept is to improve an earlier OD matrix to a newer one so that the assignment results based on this new matrix would be consistent with the measured traffic pattern. Traffic information retrieved from I-66 will be used as test bed for the estimation model.
