Analysis of Heavy Vehicle Underride Crash Data

In this study, an analysis of crash data will be conducted to define the current rear and side underride safety problem for heavy vehicles including tractor-semitrailers, single-unit trucks, and buses. As a part of this study, supplemental Trucks in Fatal Accidents (TIFA) data will be collected for underride crashes. An analysis of crash data will be performed to determine the frequency of crash involvements for all heavy vehicles. Also, the study will examine rear underride safety standards in other countries (e.g., Canada, European Union, and Japan) to determine if these additional requirements would address more crashes than what is currently addressed by the current Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) standards for underride protection in the U.S.
