Research for the AASHTO Standing Committee on the Environment. Task 37. Effective Organizational Structures and Management Practices for Achieving Environmental Stewardship in Transportation Agencies

Over the past decade, transportation agencies have become much more aware of the environmental impacts of their work. Most state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) have established a policy of environmental stewardship to preserve and protect the natural environment while still finding ways to expedite project approvals. Some states are emerging as leaders in this regard, and can provide valuable lessons to be shared among all DOTs. To some extent, organizational structures and management practices can serve to facilitate this move towards integrating environmental stewardship into their cultures and into their business practices. There is a need to identify and analyze these organizational structures and management practices to serve as guidelines for all DOTs. The objective of this study is to provide guidelines to DOTs on implementing organizational structures and management practices to facilitate environmental stewardship and streamlining.</font>
