Longitudinal Cracking in Concrete at Bridge Deck Dams on Structural Rehabilitation Projects

The main objective of this project is to identify the causes of longitudinal cracking in newly placed concrete deck segments adjacent to bridge deck expansion dam replacements. Such early-age damage has been observed on several recent bridge rehabilitation projects in Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 3-0. In addition to identifying the causes of the problem, through a comprehensive literature search, review of design and construction practices, and laboratory testing, the research team will provide recommendations to PennDOT to modify the design, materials, and construction practices to mitigate this type of distress on future projects.
