Evaluation of Real-Time Parking Information Dissemination on Energy Consumption and Environment Pollution

The project is proposed to expand the previous efforts (by WinLab-Rutgers) performed on Parking Guidance and Information System (ParkNet) and assess the effect of real-time dissemination of on-street parking information using mobile connectivity on the gas emission and consequently the environment pollution. The research team will perform analyses on a hypothetical Central Business District (CBD) roadway network where travelers will be informed on the availability of on-street parking by their mobile devices and directed to the closest available parking spots to their destination points. The vehicle-miles traveled and the pollution produced by these travelers will be compared with other travelers who are not equipped with this service. This assessment will provide evidence that how the mobile connectivity can save energy and reduce the environment pollution.
