Work Zone Safety Speed Management
Speeding in work zones is one of the most common traffic violations as observed by road builders and road maintenance crews. Speeding in work zones creates an unsafe situation for road crews and all types or road users. Road agencies have tried a variety of techniques to control speeding in work zones and a body of literature exists on the topic of speed management in work zones. TAC and a number of Canadian jurisdictions have recognized the need to provide national guidance on the work zone safety best practices, specifically on the speed management topic. The long-term objective of the Road Safety Standing Committee is to develop a Best Practice Guide for Work Zone Safety. The first chapter to be developed should address work zone safety speed control. The material to be included in this chapter will be based on this synthesis of Practices document, which will act as baseline material for the development of this chapter. The Synthesis of Practices for Work Zone Safety Speed Management will include recommendations on implementation, installation and maintenance techniques and procedures for work zone safety speed management practices, including a discussion on any related environmental, safety and operational impacts.
