Evaluation of 3-D Laser Scanning for Construction Applications

The objective of this project is to determine cost-effective means to implement laser scanning technology in the construction phase of the Department of Illinois (IDOT) projects. The primary goal is to study use of laser scanner for evaluating pay quantities for earthwork operations. Software will be developed to aid in planning of laser scanning operations, and to determine earthwork quantities. The use of laser scanning for monitoring settlement during pile driving operations will also be studied. Other applications in road construction will be evaluated in consultation with the TRP.
