Synthesis of Information Related to Transit Problems. Topic SF-15. Practices in Wayside Rail Track/Transit Worker Safety Protection

Public rail transit agencies are seeing a sharp rise in fatalities for rail transit wayside workers. This increase has caused great concern for the FTA, who reported that between October 2005 and April 2007, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) data show a three-fold increase in the number of rail transit worker fatalities and a significant increase in injuries. Because of this concern, in the 2008 Rail Transit Safety Action Plan, the Federal Transit Administration identified a list of ten safety action priorities, of which priority number one calls for the improvement of the safety of transit workers, including right-of-way safety.
