Traffic Signal Warrants

In 2003, Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) published the Canadian Traffic Signal Warrant Procedure which presents the results of a review of practice for determining traffic signal warrants, an evaluation of different methodologies and a new traffic signal warrant methodology approved for inclusion in TAC's Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Since issuing the warrant procedure, some jurisdictions have conducted a reassessment of intersections yielding results that suggest some refinement to the warrant model is required. The objective of this proposed project would be to refine the model such that it considers a movement-by-movement conflict cross-product rather than the present main street-side street cross-product. Initial investigations of this approach show promise although more investigation is required. The deliverable of this project will be revisions to the 2003 report and warrant procedure as well as the CD ROM support software.
