Seismic Instrumentation of the Kealakaha Stream Bridge

The existing bridge over the Kealakaha Stream on the Island of Hawaii is scheduled for replacement. The new bridge will be a prestressed concrete structure spanning approximately 600 feet, and designed to withstand all anticipated loads, including earthquake ground shaking. Because of the bridge's location on the seismically active island of Hawaii, it represents an ideal opportunity for the first seismic instrumentation of a major bridge structure in the State of Hawaii. Earthquakes in the future will be monitored to study the response on the structure and compare the response with the analytical model used to design the bridge. In addition to seismic monitoring, the instrumentation will provide feedback on the dynamic properties of the structure under ambient traffic load. This information will be used to evaluate changes in the structural response with time so as to identify potential deterioration of the structure. The project will include: 1) coordinating with the design consultant of the bridge for the instrument installation; 2) procure and install the instruments in the new construction; 3) test the concrete properties of the new bridge; 4) monitor and maintain the instruments; 5) monitor ambient traffic; 6) process all data collected during an earthquake event; and 7) prepare final technical report at the completion of the study.
