Continuously Monitored Scour

The focus of this project is to observe scour taking place under pressure from rising water at the point in time just before the ice sheet begins to break up. A data acquisition system and video camera have been installed at the scour monitoring site, which is the US Route 5 bridge over the White River in Hartford, VT. This site has been monitored in the winter months over the past six years, using a wireless network to transfer the data and images to CRREL. Continuing system reliability challenges and problems will be resolved to insure that the CRREL web site has current data. The database will be analyzed and a report published outlining the work and measurements obtained to date. Monitoring of the effects of scour due to pressure flow under ice during periods of seasonal melt will continue, with yearly monitoring through the winter 2009/2010.

    • Instrumentation, a data acquisition system and a web cam have been installed at the site. To help visualize the cause-effect relationship between the scour process and the hydraulics and ice cover, the stage and water temperatures are plotted on the website along with the images from the web cam. Field measurements have been useful in further refining the Time Domain Reflectometry technology for monitoring scour around bridges. A laboratory study is also being conducted to study the effects of bridge pier scour in CRREL's flume. The measurements and observations from the White River will be used to calibrate the laboratory testing procedure.
