Cross Median Crashes

After several recent fatal accidents involving cross median crashes, the Commissioner has asked for immediate measures and subsequently a permanent solution to minimize the potential of these types of accidents. An abbreviated state of the art investigation has been conducted and two median barrier systems as a pilot project will be constructed at the following locations: (1) Route 78 from approximately MP 23.3 to 24.48 and (2) Route 80 from approximately MP 27.25 to 28.16. It is requested that Research monitor the post construction safety experience of the barrier installations at these two locations and prepare a report containing conclusions and recommendations if any accidents occur. An accident study has been conducted by the Missouri DOT on sites where 3-strand guard cable was installed in medians to prevent cross median crashes. Their analysis compares locations utilizing the median barrier with types and number of accidents at locations with similar cross section without the barrier. A synopsis of this study is available upon request.
