Design and Concrete Material Requirements for Ultra-Thin Whitetopping

The objective of this research project is to provide Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) with an Ultra-Thin Whitetopping (UTW) thickness design method and guidelines for UTW design, concrete material selection, and construction practices. Existing procedures for UTW will be reviewed in collaboration with Dr. Ioannides from UC. The specific tasks of this project are to evaluate the effects of fibers and concrete material properties on slab size and thickness requirements. Factors such as existing condition of the AC, AC thickness, interface preparation and strength, and saw-cut timing and depth will be evaluated and guidelines established.
