Development of Post-Earthquake Bridge Inspection Guidelines

A final report will be produced that recommends guidelines for the inspection of bridges and the prioritization of such inspections, as well as make recommendations for immediate repairs to reopen critical bridges based on expected failure modes. A second output will be a one-day training course developed and conducted for bridge engineers and inspectors. Desired Outcome: The availability of guidelines will allow the Department to respond more quickly following an earthquake, enhancing the mobility and safety of the traveling public during the time immediately following an earthquake. Our ability to respond to massive and potentially catastrophic earthquake will also improve the economic sustainability of the transportation system. Each of these is a Department priority result area.
