Development, Deployment and Testing of an Integrated Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety System

For many years, the Calspan-University of Buffalo (CUBRC)/Veridian Engineering Team has been developing on-vehicle technologies to improve the safety of commercial vehicles. Technologies have been developed and tested for crash detection and notification; wireless communications; automatic vehicle location; vehicle system communications; and automatic brake monitoring. These systems were developed and tested seperately, and, until recent months, they had never been brought together into an integrated on-vehicle system. In 2001, a partnership was formed that included the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the Kentucky Transportation Center, and the CUBRC/Veridian Team. Using funding from the FY01 ITS Integration Component of the ITS Deployment Program, this partnership undertook a project to design, develop, and test an integrated on-vehicle system to accomplish the functions of Automatic Collision Notification (ACN), Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), and Automated Brake Monitoring (ABM). The system has been developed, and initial testing has been conducted in a laboratory and test-track environment. Phase two of the Commercial Vehicle Safety system program will uses funding from the FY02 ITS Integration Component of the ITS Deployment Program to deploy the system developed in Phase one in a fleet of approximately 25 commercial vehicles in the Lexington. Kentucky area. The fleet will be monitored for a period of one year to allow an assessment of the performance and benefits of the system.
