Long-Range Optimal Deployment of ITS Strategies: Concept Definition

The primary objective of the research is to determine how best to approach the long-range deployment problem. The project would develop a conceptual approach to how ITS investments could be staged to maximize their benefit. This research project deals with the issue of how ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) strategies and technologies should be implemented over a long period of time (e.g. 10 to 20 years). It is common practice for long-range transportation plans to include ITS elements, but there is a pressing need for methodologies for deciding when ITS strategies should be deployed in accordance with asset management principles. The project will identify ITS strategies that should be considered in a staged manner and accumulate or develop evaluation and decision criteria that would assist the decision-maker in developing an optimal plan for deploying ITS. Given the limited scope of the project, it will likely develop only a conceptual approach, with more work needed to develop a fully implementable model.
