Chemical Agent Detection Sensor Program

This project enables the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to demonstrate and evaluate a prototype chemical agent sensor system to counter terrorism--one that strengthens the security and emergency preparedness of an underground transit station in the MBTA subway system. The project will build upon lessons learned from the chemical agent sensor program initiated at the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) system. Chemical agent detection technologies and video surveillance equipment will be installed, tested and evaluated at the MBTA subway stations, along with the deployment of an early warning and emergency response system. Operational tests will be conducted to determine the reliability and maintainability of the chemical agent detectors at high threat stations in Boston. This project advances PROTECT (Program for Response Options and Technology Enhancements for Chemical/Biological Terrorism) - a program for chemical and biological preparedness designed to improve the safety and security of the citizenry and transit systems against attacks by weapons of mass destruction. The project was undertaken through an interagency partnership, including the FTA, MBTA, and the Departments of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)--to determine the effectiveness of chemical-agent detection devices at underground transit systems.
