Seismic Vulnerability of Wall Piers and Abutments

This study aims to identify the number and characteristics of bridges on priority emergency routes in southern Illinois that utilize wall type piers, and then to assess the seismic vulnerability of those wall pier bridges. Systematic assessments will be made of the damage to be expected for specific bridges, accounting for the existing structural details and characteristic earthquake ground motions for the bridge sites. If possible, cost-effective retrofit techniques will be developed and the likely reduction in damage will be predicted.
