Safe Ways to School--Phase 2

The percentage of children who walk or bike to school has declined drastically in the last thirty years from over 80% in the 1960's to less than 20% today. Accompanying this decline has been a dramatic increase in obesity in adults and children alike. Physical inactivity has contributed to the 100% increase in childhood obesity in the U.S. since 1980. The Phase 1 study conducted an in-depth analysis of four selected school districts in Maine. Current practices were measured, attitudinal surveys administered, obstacles to walking and biking identified, and implementation plans to overcome these obstacles developed. Phase 2 will develop programs that encourage walking and biking to school and measure the performance of these programs.
