Evaluation of Context Sensitive Solutions Along Midcoast Rt. 1 Corridor
The first of three projects is under construction that will use context sensitive solutions to help sustain important community interests without compromising safety and mobility. This project will enable Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Maine Department of Transportation to evaluate the effects of this flexible design approach. The evaluation project will focus on measuring and analysis of before/after traffic speeds and crash data on the three flexible design projects. To provide an adequate amount of crash data a three year period following completion of construction is required. The Maine DOT's state of the art safety management systems database will be used for this purpose. In addition a survey instrument will be used to gather perceptions and opinions from travelers, the local community, bicyclists & pedestrians and other groups. The project will also include up to three "control projects" where the highway is constructed to current design standards.
