Determination of the Behavior of Modified Concrete Mixes Subjected to Dynamic Loading

There has been substantial movement toward the use of modifiers for portland cement concrete to enhance strength, reduce permeability and shrinkage and improve the workability of the mixes. These include pozzolans, fibers, shrinkage reducers, admixtures for air entrainment, water reducers and retarders. These have been fairly effective overall, to the betterment of concrete structural elements. As the strength of the concrete increases, there has been a tendency to reduce the volume and number of elements, which depend on the increased higher strength performance to compensate for less material. Most testing of unmodified and modified concrete mixes consists of a static load to failure. Unfortunately, in the real world concrete is very rarely subjected to such static loads. Concrete is rarely subjected to dynamic loads testing, although this is much closer to reality in the infrastructure. The intent is to determine the fatigue properties, strength and durability of enhanced concrete through dynamic loading, the concrete shall be enhanced by various combinations and quantities of commercially available modifiers for the purpose of improving concrete durability. The plastic and hardened properties, including shrinkage, will be determined for the experimental concrete and correlated to its fatigue properties.
