An Evaluation of the Impact of Lane Use Restrictions for Large Trucks Along I-40 Near Knoxville - Phase III
The research team will use a behavior-based multi-purpose traffic simulation computer program (VISSIM), to determine the impact of an existing truck lane use restriction on local and recreational traffic using the interchanges in the Pigeon River Gorge. Of particular interest will be the possibility of a "barrier effect" created by trucks in the right lane which could potentially make merging maneuvers from these entrance ramps difficult for vehicles, especially those used by various whitewater rafting outfitters in the area.
