An Interactive Tool to Compare and Communicate Traffic Safety Risks

This project will construct an online database and decision support tool, hosted on the AAA Foundation Web site, to facilitate direct and systematic comparisons of transportation risks by a variety of users. Risk calculations will be based on the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). A level of detail currently inaccessible without the benefit of expensive software and expertise will allow users to explore the relative risks across transportation modes, demographic variables, vehicle types, safety systems, and environmental characteristics. The Web site will provide simple charts, graphs, and summary statistics to compare relative risks, such as the risk of having a 17-year-old student drive himself to school versus ride with a parent or ride a school bus.
