Radiation Detection Pilot Program

The purpose of the proposed research is to develop methods for detecting radioactive materials of concern moving on Illinois highways. A critical element of this program is the ability to detect and intercept a dirty bomb used by a terrorist organization. A dirty bomb is the combination of a long-lived isotope of radioactive material and conventional explosives. The goal of the terrorist organization is to contaminate a public facility with radioactive materials thus causing great economic impact on the city, state, and nation.
