Dust Storm Detection
The goal of this project is to help the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) understand how it can detect and notify drivers of potential dust storms. Researchers will assess dust-detection systems currently used by transportation agencies and calculate their safety benefits. They will provide IDOT with how the systems’ capabilities, requirements and costs may meet IDOT’s needs as well as recommendations and a framework for potential implementation. IDOT will use the findings to identify potential systems to obtain. Effective use of dust-detection systems will improve IDOT’s response time and awareness of developing dust storms.
