Good Practices: Coordinating and Managing Airside Operations During Construction
Airport operators routinely undertake airside construction and maintenance projects that require effective coordination, collaboration, and communication among airports, airlines, contractors, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and other key stakeholders to ensure operational safety, minimize disruptions, and manage stakeholder and public expectations. Airports currently rely on information from multiple sources when coordinating airside construction activities, and existing guidance does not comprehensively address the full range of safety, operational, and management considerations associated with planning, designing, and implementing construction projects across movement and non-movement areas. The research is intended to be applicable to airports of all sizes. The objective of this research is to develop a comprehensive collection of good practices for coordinating and managing airside operations during construction projects. The research will identify actions and coordination approaches needed throughout a project's lifecycle; provide guidance for communication and collaboration among airport operators and key stakeholders; address critical project milestones, approvals, operational safety, irregular operations during construction, and unexpected circumstances; and examine the use of digital tools and technologies to support construction coordination. The project will produce good practices, airport operator checklists, and a stakeholder coordination toolkit applicable to a broad range of airside construction projects and airport types.
