Assessing the Impact of Geogrid on Pavement Design
Use of geogrids in pavement foundations extends pavement life, reduces required layer thickness, and decreases stresses on weak subgrade soils. But the magnitude of these benefits has not been quantified. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) also has not formally incorporated considerations related to geogrids into pavement design practices, particularly within the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Pavement ME Design (PMED) framework. As a result, geogrid appli-ations in KYTC projects lack consistent design guidance and are not systematically factored into design decision making.
