Channelized Multilane Roundabout Design Guidance
Some multilane roundabouts have recorded elevated frequencies of property damage-only crashes. A potential solution is the use of channelized multilane roundabouts. These configurations, which remain uncommon in the United States, establish more clearly defined driving paths within the circulatory roadway. This cuts down on weaving and lane-change conflicts that are common at standard multilane roundabouts. Despite their demonstrated promise for improving roadway operations, The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Roundabout Design Guidance does not include material on channelized multilane roundabouts. Several channelized multilane roundabouts are being developed across Kentucky, but the Cabinet lacks agency-specific guidance to support consistent design and evaluation of this roundabout configuration.
