Transportation Research Synthesis: Biochar Design Guidance
The State is conducting ongoing research with the objectives of developing knowledge, tools, and protocols to inform best practice standards for effective implementation of biochar in Bioretention systems (BRSs). While this research will inform future engineering design specifications and design guidance relative to biochar use in transportation project BRSs, there is an immediate need to develop a first-edition design manual for the use of biochar in current State projects. Specifically, this project will work with the State to search nationally if other agencies have developed a design procedure, or parts of a design procedure. The process will be a series of surveys and interviews; ideally via leveraged relationships with national organizations, such as Transportation Research Board (TRB), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Mid-America Association of State Transportation Officials (MAASHTO), American Public Works Association (APWA) Stormwater Committee, APWA, and Central States Water Environment Association covering Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota Watersheds.
