Field Performance Assessment of Chip Seals with Updated Chip Seal Specification and Fog Seal Treatment
The purpose of this study is to provide Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) with a data‐driven understanding of how recent specification updates and the addition of fog sealing influence the performance characteristics of pavement preservation treatments, particularly chip seals. Building on this, the study has two primary objectives: (1) to evaluate the efficacy and impact of the updated specification on the performance of modified single-layer chip seals; and (2) to assess the performance of chip seal applications incorporating fog sealing. To achieve these objectives, the study will encompass field construction monitoring, laboratory characterization, and friction and texture measurements across various field sections. All sections—built under both current and updated specifications, with and without fog seal—will be systematically monitored over the study period to capture performance trends over time and provide relative performance insights.
