Promoting Sustainable Travel within Communities through Behavioral Interventions and Emerging Mobility Solutions: Stage 2

This proposal outlines Stage 2 of a project aimed at advancing communities towards societal travel goals of mobility, accessibility, environmental sustainability, and equity. Complementing the foundational work in Stage 1, this phase focuses on practical implementation and validation of a systematic framework by leveraging the community of Peachtree Corners (PTC), Georgia, as a living lab. The framework integrates behavioral interventions and emerging mobility solutions to address challenges related to low adoption of sustainable travel modes and limited access to societal services for disadvantaged groups. Through active engagement with community residents, governance, and mobility service providers, field tests will be conducted in PTC to refine the framework and assess its efficacy in real-world settings. Key outputs include behavioral models for promoting sustainable travel, emerging mobility solutions considering traditional and emerging modes to enhance societal goals, and a prototype smartphone app for delivering personalized interventions to travelers in real-time. These outputs will inform guidelines for implementing the framework in diverse community contexts and contribute to evidence-based decision-making for policymakers and urban planners. Anticipated outcomes include the implementation of customized solutions to address disparities in mobility and accessibility, leading to enhanced quality of life. The project aims to promote sustainable travel behaviors, reduce carbon emissions, and foster social inclusion. Further, the dissemination of project findings is expected to advance interdisciplinary knowledge in transportation, urban planning, behavioral economics, and multimodal operations, thereby contributing to broader scientific understanding and cross-sector collaborations.
