Effectiveness and Safety of Temporary Portable Rumble Strips (TPRS)

Temporary Portable Rumble Strips (TPRS) are devices placed transversely across a lane of traffic. TPRS are often specified for use in work zones on Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) projects where lanes are being closed on rural freeways, or where flagging operations are in effect on rural 2-lane highways. However, there is a safety risk to construction personnel and to the traveling public associated with the deployment, maintenance, and retrieval of TPRS, since workers are required to enter the roadway to accomplish these tasks. UDOT would like to have a better understanding of the expected safety benefits and the expected risks of TPRS. The objectives of this study include: Identifying practices in other states for TPRS use, siting, deployment, and retrieval. This includes the conditions in which TPRS are used, the number of strips deployed, and practices for safely installing and retrieving the strips; as well as measuring the effectiveness of TPRS in slowing traffic ahead of work zones.
