Evaluating the Interaction of the Transit System on Safety in Utah
The purpose of this research is to evaluate, understand, and quantify the interaction of the transit system in the state of Utah (specifically buses and bus stops) as a function of traffic safety and efficiency. Specifically, that of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users (VRUs). This study will use geographic information system (GIS) tools to locate bus stops and then do an analysis of the crashes around bus stops to see how the crash frequencies compare to other locations across the state. Identifying the types of crashes occurring would also be beneficial and help to identify countermeasures that could be implemented to improve the relationship between public transportation and the safety of VRUs. The results of this analysis will help in developing and recommending readily implementable engineering and educational countermeasures that will help improve safety at and around transit stops. These countermeasures will be considered by Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Traffic & Safety in their annual safety evaluations and will be implemented to help improve safety.
