A Peer Evaluation of Safety at Signalized Intersections in Utah

To better understand how Utah intersection related crashes compare to other peer states across the US, the purpose of this research is to quantify and evaluate the apparent safety rates (crash rates) and frequencies at intersections (specifically signalized intersections) in Utah compared to other states. Once the crashes have been quantified, the secondary purpose is to determine why there may or may not be differences. This research is important in understanding the characteristics of such crashes and in searching for ways to improve safety by reducing intersection-related crashes across the state. The results of this research will allow Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Traffic & Safety to continue to identify new and innovative ways to improve safety across the state by targeting signalized intersections and identifying countermeasures from peer states that may benefit Utah and help to reduce the number of intersection-related crashes across the state.
