Synthesis of Information Related to Airport Practices. Topic S02-223. Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at Airport Passenger Parking Facilities
ACRP Synthesis 54, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at Airport Parking Facilities report was published in 2014 when electric vehicle (EV) sales were just over 100,000 in the United States. By 2022 EV sales had grown to 800,000. The information in Synthesis 54 is almost 10 years old and with the rise in EV sales, airports need to accommodate the rise in demand for EV charging. OBJECTIVE:The objective of this synthesis is to describe how hub airports plan for, manage, and implement electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at public parking facilities. The audience for this report is airport planners, engineers, and managers. INFORMATION TO BE GATHERED & TASKS:Information to be described in a concise report includes (but is not limited to): Describe why airports are installing charging stations; Describe how airports determined the quantity, level, and location of charging stations; Describe current charging standards; Describe how airports monitor usage, and how they identify when more charging stations are needed; Describe how airports fund installation of charging stations, for example grants or public-private partnerships; Describe how ongoing operational and maintenance costs are covered; Describe if airports charge for service and their cost recovery plan; Describe planning for electrical capacity limitations and load management strategies; Describe life safety issues; Describe differing needs at small, medium, and large hub airports. Case examples should identify innovative planning solutions that have been implemented; and challenges and lessons learned. Information will be collected through literature review, a survey of airports, and interviews with selected airports for the development of case examples. Knowledge gaps and suggestions for future research, including a problem statement, to address those gaps will also be identified.
