COVERT: Cognitive Internet of Vulnerable Road Users in Traffic

The research team proposes a novel approach that investigates the direct incorporation of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) in the Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) architecture, bridging bidirectional communication between VRUs and connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and leveraging cooperative sensing for forecasting VRUs’ intent and future motion trajectories. In particular, the team will investigate how data collected from neural and physiological sensors worn by the VRUs can be leveraged to predict their location, motion and movement intention. Such information when broadcasted to CAVs in real time will allow them to implement safe control strategies and facilitates coordinated road usage among all road agents.
