Insights from Global South paratransit services for applications to microtransit in California

This research will summarize for policymakers and transportation planners the literature on jitney/paratransit services in the developing world and possible strategies for adapting elements of existing models to the California context. In addition, the white paper will leverage the research team's network of colleagues in Southeast Asia and South Africa to include a diversity of perspectives and cutting-edge research from countries where jitney services account for a large part of the transportation system. The deliverable will be a white paper that summarizes common elements of jitney services in developing countries, past experiments in the United States, how past experiments inform potential policy transfers, and how transportation innovations can facilitate the implementation of microtransit in the California context.
