Evaluation of AC Binder Testing Results for Sensitivity to Kentucky Ideal-CT Test Results

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) recently introduced specifications for PG64-22 bituminous mix designs that are required to meet Ideal-CT and Hamburg values. The Cabinet is currently developing Ideal-CT and Hamburg values for PG76-22 bituminous mix designs. Since the introduction of the Ideal-CT and Hamburg mix design requirements, practitioners have observed that asphalt binder sources of the same grade may influence IDEAL-CT and Hamburg test results. Testing has found that different asphalt binder sources — holding other mix design parameters constant — yield different IDEAL-CT values. Updated specifications will improve pavement performance and lengthen the time between rehabilitations.
