Field and Lab Evaluation of Roller Compacted Concrete Mixtures for Pavements

Roller compacted concrete (RCC) pavements have been constructed for past 50 years, with most applications on industrial and port facilities. With the advancement of paving equipment, mobile batch plants, admixtures, surface finishing techniques, and larger pool of skilled contractors, RCC pavements applications have expanded to parking areas, exterior lots of commercial warehouses, residential streets, and lower volume roads. The objective of this project is to conduct a research study that documents an RCC pavement project, particularly evaluating the mixture volumetrics through field and lab observation and testing. Additionally, RCC mixture constituents and proportions will be evaluated with local sources for a potential RCC pavement at the Illinois Certification and Research Track (ICART). The proposed research has been organized into four tasks: (1) literature review, (2) field and lab evaluation of RCC pavement, (3) lab evaluation of constituent materials and proportions for an RCC pavement at ICART, and (4) documentation of the results to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
