Developing Guidelines for Context Specific Crosswalk Design

Increases in pedestrian-motor vehicle crashes in Virginia warrant additional scrutiny on current pedestrian safety practices, including crosswalk design. High visibility crosswalks (continental, bar pairs, ladder, and zebra markings) have been shown to increase crosswalk visibility for drivers compared to standard transverse parallel line crosswalks. While Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) currently provides guidance for situations in which high visibility crosswalks should be used, it has not been assessed by context-driven safety analysis and localities may follow different guidance. This research effort aims to provide additional guidance for high visibility crosswalk usage by analyzing crosswalk safety in a variety of roadway contexts.
