Repair Guidelines for Impact-damaged Bridges

This project is to address a critical issue for Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) by providing repair guidance for impact-damaged bridges and will establish repair requirements /guidelines that will maximize the service-life of infrastructure and reduce the personnel time involved in reviews and approvals. The objectives of this multi-university collaborative research are: (1) To collect and quantify the types and occurrences of impact damage in GDOT bridge projects via interviews with GDOT, contractors, and fabricators. (2) To thoroughly review and synthesize repair procedures from other state agencies as well as a wealth of unpublished research utilizing the principal investigators' (PIs’) networks within organizations (e.g., PCI and ACI). (3) To conduct with full-scale and component-level experimental investigations to determine guidelines for repair techniques and thresholds for element replacement. Specifically, the project team will consider repeated impacts near the strands and the cases where horizontal cracking is observed and repaired along the web. (4) To develop and utilize computational model to better understand the behavior of concrete (e.g., losses in strength and stiffness) in the damaged zone to be used in analysis of the entire component and/or structure. (5) To summarize research findings in a pragmatic form by providing recommendations via a draft GDOT repair manual for bridge impact.
