North/West Passage Transportation Pooled Fund Study: Freight Task Force

In 2014, the North/West Passage (NWP) Freight Task Force (FTF) was established in recognition of the unique freight-related challenges faced by the partner DOTs as a result of an environment characterized by harsh winter weather, mountainous terrain, and expansive rural areas. The partners also identified routine activities where coordinating with each other across their borders could provide benefits, including: (1) providing commercial vehicle traveler information, including information specific to truck parking; (2) electronic screening of commercial vehicle; and (3) coordinating oversize and overweight movements, and other topics. In Year 8 (2024), the FTF will conduct two projects: (1) Uniform Allowable Weights for Divisible Loads During Declared Emergencies and (2) Truck Travel Times and Need for Hours-of-Service Truck Parking Assessment, each with focused research aimed at uncovering practical solutions to two of the region's most pressing needs. This work is intended to continue to support the NWP as it moves from "thinking" to "doing."
