GIS-Based Source Management System: A Database of Material Sources in Idaho for Use on ITD Projects

Each Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) District office is responsible for maintaining maps of existing construction material sources and for achieving long-term material needs by maintaining a proper network of quality material sources. Source location and the transportation of quality aggregates impact costs of construction projects more than any other activity. Information on the availability, quantity, and quality of aggregates must be organized, easily accessible, for reasonable and economic development of highway projects. ITD does not presently have a statewide, efficient, standardized way to store and share information on the quality and quantity of material sources. This lack of efficiency results in higher operation costs and more time spent by ITD staff to determine material source availability. ITD staff spends a considerable amount of time answering contractor questions on Source Materials related to construction projects. This project will create a statewide GIS database of all relevant material source information for state-owned/controlled sources and sources on the Qualified Aggregate Material Suppliers (QAMS) list. This information needs to be easily accessed by ITD personnel for business needs and the contracting community for construction bidding.
